More support needed around childcare support in the community – Nugent

Independendt local election candidate Peter James Nugent has raised the issue of parents in Drogheda who have long been struggling to find suitable and affordable childcare for their children. “The lack of spaces in crèches and afterschool services has been a source of frustration and stress for many families in the area” he says.

The high demand for childcare services in Drogheda has led to long waiting lists and limited options for parents, making it difficult to balance work and family responsibilities. Childcare is an essential service for working parents, allowing them to continue their careers and provide for their families.

However, the shortage of places in childcare facilities is making it increasingly difficult for parents to access this much-needed support. As a result, many parents are having to sacrifice their careers or rely on informal arrangements, which may not always be reliable or affordable.

It is clear that there is a pressing need for more support for parents in Drogheda when it comes to childcare. The current situation is not only putting a strain on families but also on crèche workers who are overwhelmed with the demand for their services.

“The lack of available places means that crèches are often at full capacity, leaving workers with little flexibility and added pressure. Furthermore, the pandemic has only exacerbated the situation, as many parents have had to return to work and need reliable childcare services.

“With the ongoing uncertainty and restrictions, it is essential to provide parents with all the necessary support they need to juggle childcare and work responsibilities. One solution to the lack of places in childcare facilities is through government-funded grants aimed at increasing the number of available spaces.

“These grants can help crèches expand their capacity and, in turn, support more families in need. Additionally, companies can also play a role by offering childcare benefits to their employees, such as on-site crèches or subsidized childcare fees. Moreover, more afterschool options need to be made available to working parents in Drogheda.

“Afterschool programs not only provide a safe and supervised environment for children but also allow working parents to pick up their children after work without having to rush or worry about childcare arrangements. By investing in afterschool programs, we can bridge the gap between school hours and working hours, making it easier for parents to find a work-life balance. it is clear that the shortage of places in childcare facilities in Drogheda is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.

“Parents in the area need more support, and crèche workers need more resources to cater to the growing demand for childcare. By investing in grants, afterschool programs, and other initiatives, we can work towards providing a better future for both parents and children in Drogheda. It is time to recognize the vital role that childcare plays in our society and take action to ensure that all families have access to quality and affordable childcare.”
