A woman in her early 20s was killed yesterday evening when she was struck by an express train travelling from Dublin Connolly to Belfast.

The incident, which Gardaí are treating as a tragic accident, occurred at about 7.20 pm on the tracks just north of Laytown railway station.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the area was sealed off as Gardaí investigated the sudden death and the woman’s body was removed.

Emergency services attended the tragic incident and the line between Balbriggan and Drogheda was closed immediately and remained closed for some considerable time.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said on Friday night the line would remain closed north of Balbriggan while the emergency services attended the scene. It was likely that the line woul dremain clsed until Saturday morning he said.

The woman's body was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan where a post mortem was to be carried out.
