Guest speaker at the Development Perspectives event on Friday is Professor Richard G. Wilkinson.

Drogheda development education NGO Development Perspectives has secured a world class guest speaker for their annual SDG Advocate Showcase which takes place via Zoom this Friday, October 23.

In what promises to be an intriguing and inspirational evening the guest speaker will be the well-known author, advocate and political activist Richard G. Wilkinson.

Wilkinson, who is Professor Emeritus of Social Epidemiology at the University of Nottingham and author of works such as Unhealthy Societies: The Afflictions of Inequality and its sequel The Impact of Inequality: How to Make Sick Societies Healthier, will discuss how societies with greater levels of income inequality suffer more from health and social issues and why equality is better for everyone.

The event is part of a larger eight-month programme during which 19 change-makers learn about and take action on the UN's Global Goals.

In previous years this training would have included residential stays and a two-week phase in Tanzania or Vietnam, however this year the programme moved, like many other things, to an online space.

Participants logged into Zoom where they were met with facilitators from Development Perspectives who took them through workshops on an introduction to development theories, reflection practices and, of course, the Sustainable Development Goals. The participants have then gone on to create their own personal action projects for their own communities which they will present on the night.

A podcast will be created of the event and will be made available on the Development Perspectives website - www.developmentperspectives.ie

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) / Global Goals?

In September 2015, world leaders from 193 countries came together to adopt the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs became the document to guide our social, economic, and environmental actions to achieve a sustainable future by 2030. As a result, everyone has a responsibility in making the SDG agenda a reality.

Who are Development Perspectives?

Development Perspectives is an independent Development Education non-governmental organisation (NGO) and a registered charity (CHY18555). Development Perspectives is based in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland but works with partners all over both Ireland and the world.
