Unlike other shopping centres Drogheda Town Centre is actually in the centre of town so for that reason alone it has always been popular with townspeople.

Certainly it was a big factor in the choice of location for Drogheda’s newest gym, Énergie Fitness, which was officially opened yesterday by the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Sport and Tourism, Brendan Griffin TD.

As Mr. Griffin said in his opening speech, this is definitely the way forward – bringing the gym to the people rather than the people having to travel out of town to the gym.

“One of the peak times for gym usage is that hour after work” he said. “People nip in to the gym to avoid the rush hour traffic but I reckon that, with the facilities I’ve seen here today, that Energie Fitness will be creating their own incoming traffic!”

The opening of Énergie Fitness in West Street is also symbolic of the steady regrowth of the town centre area which was badly hit in the recession . It is the latest business to have seen the value of locating close to the customer and, as co-owner Marta Jedlinska said, to be part of the local community.

Physical instructor and co-owner Alex O’Brien told Drogheda Life that being at the centre of Drogheda was a large part of the Énergie Fitness business plan but only part of it.

“Location is of course vital” he said, “but not only is Énergie Fitness easy to get to, with a huge car park right under the building, we also offer the best value around” he said.

And he wasn't joking. For a flat fee of just €24.99 per month members can avail of unlimited use of the state of the art, fully equipped gym which stretches over two floors above the Drogheda Town Centre and also partake in an astonishing 35 classes a week.

Energie Fitness Drogheda is part of the Énergie Fitness Club Franchising Group whose Chief Executive Jim Durie was on hand yesterday to witness the opening of the latest gym in the Énergie stable.

Scotsman Durie used to be physio for the Scots rugby team before launching his business which now has more than 140 gyms in the UK and Ireland under the Énergie umbrella.
