Site sought for new ambulance base in Drogheda

The Cottage Hospital in Scarlett Street which is the current base fro th Ambulance Service in Drogheda.

Louth County Council and the HSE National Ambulance Service are working together to find a suitable site for a new Ambulance base in Drogheda.

The move comes following moves by Mayor of Drogheda Paul Bell who said that the HSE National Ambulance base in Drogheda is “long past its sell by date.”

“The facility, which is located on the grounds of the Cottage Hospital, is no longer suitable for Ambulance personnel or their equipment and unfortunately this situation has been ongoing for some time and much longer than necessary” Bell said.

“Following on from a number of informal contacts with the National Ambulance Service it became apparent that a number of sites identified were not suitable for a range of reasons.

Everything from location, access and speed of Ambulance response factored into the decision not to progress with purchase or planning application.

As such fearing that the process would go on for ever I requested Louth County Council to assist the Ambulance Service by identifying sites in the Drogheda area both in public and private ownership which may be suitable for the construction of a purpose built facility which will serve the needs of the service and most importantly the public.

“I am delighted that both agencies have agreed to work together on this part of the project which will I am sure speed up the overall project.”
