Almost 60 members of Drogheda Chamber of Commerce gathered in Scholar’s Town House last night for the organisation’s Annual General Meeting and of course the most important item on the agenda was to elect a new President and new officers.

After an hour in the wood-panelled meeting room it was announced that they had elected Shona McManus, the CEO and owner of Osborne Recruitment, as their leader for the coming year.

The new President told Drogheda Life earlier today that she had lots of ideas on how she would like to move the Chamber forward but the first thing to do was to sit down with the new council to devise a strategy for the next four to five years.

“I absolutely do have plans and ideas but my approach is a very collaborative and very focussed one to drive positive change. It’s still very early days but there is so much in so many areas for us to target” she said.

“It’s going to be an exciting year ahead and certainly a great year for Drogheda with the Fleadh Cheoil. There’s so much positive stuff going on which will hopefully set Drogheda on the map as a great place to be.”

Shona paid tribute to the incoming council saying it included a good mix of experience from people in different business sectors and different approaches.

“There’s a lot of new blood with people who have not been involved in the Chamber before coming in and are now part of the council with new business skills and fresh eyes being brought in and that’s all to the good” she said.

Asked about the “Westgate Vision” urban renewal programme published earlier this week by Louth County Council and what role she saw for Drogheda Chamber, Ms McManus said that she would like to think that they would be getting involved as much as possible and that they’d be looking at areas where they need to be putting their attention to drive change and improvement.

Outgoing President Paddy Callaghan told Drogheda Life that last night’s meeting represented the start of a new era for Drogheda Chamber with “…new people with lots of new ideas, hopes and aspirations for the future.

“I think that Drogheda will be all the better for this as well as the Chamber. There’s lots of challenges but also so many opportunities and I think Shona will be a great asset.

“She has been on the periphery of the Chamber for the last couple of months with the Skills Net Programme which enhances the skills and employability of local people, leading to increased career mobility and greater life opportunities and has had a fantastic take-up in Drogheda.

“She is a very capable and impressive lady with great organisational skills, great delegation skills and I think she’ll be great for Drogheda.”
