The Official launch of the Seachtain na Gaeilge activities at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann took place yesterday, Tuesday 13 August, in the Highlanes Gallery.
Adèle Commins, Cathaoirleach Coiste Gaeilge na Fleidhe welcomed guests commenting on the central role that the Irish language had at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda this year.
The Seachtain na Gaeilge programme has a varied programme of activities for all ages to celebrate and promote the language at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and the Seomra na Gaeilge and Ionad na Gaeilge are based in the Laurence Shopping Centre.
Activities include daily Irish classes, ciorcal comhrá, story-telling, puppet show and puppet making workshop, biodiversity workshop, basket weaving demonstration, Irish dancing classes, arts and crafts activities for children and their parents, Irish singing workshops, STEAM workshops, historical walking tours of Drogheda.

Colouring competitions and design a seanfhocal competition are running throughout the week along with a family table quiz and an historical treasure hunt around Drogheda on Friday.
The committee are very grateful to Foras na Gaeilge for their support of the events and they were delighted that Éamonn ó hArgáin from Foras na Gaeilge spoke on behalf of the organisation.
An important element of the evening was the launch of ‘Caint agus Comhrá’ by Conradh na Gaeilge. Orlaith NicGhearailt, Bainisteoir Sheachtain na Gaeilge le Conradh na Gaeilge spoke about the importance of the ciorcal comhrá at home and abroad as a means of encouraging everyone to use their cúpla focal.
The Coiste Gaeilge na Fleidhe were delighted to work closely with Conradh na Gaeilge for this year’s programme of events and are looking forward to exhibiting some of their exhibitions about the Irish language on Saturday and facilitating a seisiún . Uachtarán Conradh na Gaeilge was delighted with the prominence of the Irish language at the Fleadh.
Music was provided by the Walsh family from Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan. There was dancing from the Robinson School of Dance with music provided by Ciara Brannigan and Gráinne Casey. Orla Nic Dhiarmada, Adèle Ní Choimín and Daithí Ó Cearnaigh sang.
Speaking at the launch, Adèle Commins, Cathaoirleach Coiste Gaeilge na Fleidhe noted the importance of encouraging everyone to use the language and she made reference to the words of President Michael D Higgins who spoke at the opening of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann when he noted that we should all be proud of our ancient language and to keep it alive.
The motto for Seachtain na Gaeilge ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019 is ‘Labhair Gaeilge le linn na seachtaine agus bí bródúil aisti! Is leor cúpla focal!
