Drogheda Rural candidate Leanne Saurin is asking the public to boycott this year’s controversial Eurovision Song Contest which is being held in Israel on Saturday.
The Sinn Fein candidate said that since the year2000 close to 10,000 Palestinians, including 2,000 children, have been killed and over a million injured as a result of Israeli attacks.
“The Israeli government is continuing to enforce severe and discriminatory restrictions on Palestinians’ human rights; restrict the movement of people and goods into and out of the Gaza Strip; and enabling the unlawful transfer of Israeli citizens to settlements in the occupied West Bank” M/s Saurin said.
“This week the Israel government will host the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv and have been actively trying to whitewash the country’s involvement in the apartheid of the Palestinian people.

“Communities from across the globe have come together to boycott the Eurovision as a mark of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Performers, artists and celebrities will boycott the Eurovision Song Contest, and perform instead at Globalvision which will be live streamed the same time as the Eurovision.
“To that end I am asking everyone to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, if you believe in inclusion and diversity celebrate Globalvision with us. For more information check the Globalvision website."
M/s Saurin concluded “It is never too late to stand on the right side of history, to stand up for human rights and dignity for all. We stood as a country against apartheid in South Africa, it’s time to do the same against apartheid in Israel and Palestine.”
