You could say that the Bellewstown Races is an established feature of the social calendar around these parts. After all, it has been taking place every summer for almost three centuries! Since 1726 in fact.

In 1780 a former Mayor of Drogheda, George Tandy, persuaded King George III to sponsor a race at Bellewstown. The race was called His Majesty’s Plate and was valued at £100. If only modern day Mayors of Drogheda had that much clout!

Last weekend the luminaries of the local horse racing scene gathered in the sunshine on the terrace of The Hops Bar at the D Hotel for the official launch of this year’s season at Bellewstown which includes two meetings, the first of which starts on Wednesday 4th July and, for the first time ever, there will be racing for four evenings until Saturday July 7th.

A very enjoyable night was had by all at the launch as staff from the D Hotel and Hops Bar treated guests to a BBQ, entertainment including live music with compere for the night Bellewstown resident Gavin Duffy of Dragons Den fame keeping things moving along.

Race meetings and fashion seem to be synonymous and the launch was the perfect opportunity for fashion boutiques in Scotch Hall to showcase some of their latest fashion hosted by Dawn Finnegan of Dawn L.A Bling.

Scotch Hall has once again come on board as sponsors for this year’s Ladies Day which takes place on the Friday evening with a shopping voucher to the value of €3,000 up for grabs!

There will also be racing on the evenings of the 29th and 30th August. No doubt we / they will See You All on the Hill!
