Michael O'Dowd at Mellifont Abbey this afternoon.
Michael O’Dowd said he was deeply saddened to hear of the closure this week of Mellifont Abbey, a place of serenity and reflection where he periodically attended services.
“The Abbey has been a cherished part of our community, and its absence will be profoundly felt” he said.
“Our family had a special connection to the Abbey through An tAthair Colmcille, a renowned Irish scholar and a beloved figure.
“We were privileged to have a close friendship with him. He was invited to our wedding but, in his absentmindedness, he arrived a week late!”

“As we reflect on this loss, it is crucial that the community is consulted about what happens next. Mellifont Abbey has been central to Collon's identity, and any future plans must prioritize the needs and aspirations of local residents.
"As a growing village, Collon is in urgent need of key amenities. A playground, in particular, would be a vital addition, offering a safe space for children to play and for families to come together.
“Alongside this, other community-focused projects should be considered to ensure the Abbey’s legacy continues to benefit future generations.”
"I will advocate for a transparent and inclusive process to decide the future of this site. Mellifont Abbey has been a cornerstone of our heritage, and its story should continue to enrich the lives of the people of Collon."
