Yesterday’s opening of the first phase of the Northern Cross Route.

Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, has said that yesterday’s opening of Phase One of the Northern Cross Route is a very welcome and important step for Drogheda but we must now ensure that the development is matched by key investment in new bus and rail transport links.

The new road will formally open to the public next Monday the 4th of March and will see a brand new state of the art road, paths and cycleways connect Ballymakenny Road to the Rosehall Roundabout.

O’Dowd said “This phase one development will open up opportunities for upwards of 1300 new homes whilst also reducing some of the congestion on the North Road and surrounds.

“Whilst this is very welcome news I believe it is absolutely imperative we see plans for further investment in our towns bus network and rail connectivity.

“A new rail station in the North of Drogheda will be imperative if we are to get serious about reducing the number of vehicles choking our town centre whilst providing better choice to people travelling in and out of Drogheda.

O’Dowd added “The CEO of Louth County Council, Joan Martin, today confirmed that the council were in discussions with Irish Rail on the complex issues facing future phases of the PANCR and I hope that this will provide the basis for meaningful negotiations on a new rail station for Drogheda north.”
