An Post Mobile has launched the emporia SMART.5, a feature-rich, streamlined smartphone for retirees. The ‘best of both’ smartphone will appeal to both touchscreen converts and feature phone advocates, thanks to a tactile and interactive smart cover included with the handset.
When closed, the smart cover allows easy access to the most-used functions through a unique set of responsive ‘windows’ – instantly altering the way the smartphone looks and works. It’s so easy: simply close the smart cover and the phone behaves more like an old-style ‘feature phone’. These windows are responsive only to finger touch, so the smart cover also quells any senior users’ concerns about touchscreens, preventing scratches, pocket dialling and muted calls.
Priced from €199.95, the SMART.5 can be purchased in any post office, or at anpost.com/mobile. The phone is compatible with hearing aids, has extra loud and clear sound, and a handy magnifier for reading small print, such as instructions and restaurant menus.
The triple main camera with HD and 8MP front-facing camera caters to the large majority (80%) of senior smartphone users who want their phones to take great photos or make video calls.

On the rear is emporia’s tried-and-tested emergency button, for extra peace of mind. If pressed, up to five emergency contacts will receive a text message with the device’s location and be dialed automatically in sequence.
The SMART.5 has been carefully configured for over 66s based on live user testing. Research shows that a chief concern for this age group is not wanting to be a burden on younger relatives, while embarrassment concerning a lack of tech know-how is commonplace, especially with touchscreen technology.
The handset comes with an illustrated 154-page tried and tested training book so users can independently teach themselves or refresh their skills. It covers basics like touch and swipe and using the camera, and helps users set up contactless payments.
The screen response has been adapted to accommodate how older users interact with touchscreen technology – there is a tendency to press more heavily – while facial recognition can be used to unlock the phone with the greatest of ease.
Michael Ahern, manager, An Post Mobile says: “We see the emporia SMART.5 as a mobile phone for our times. Available at all post offices and anpost.com/mobile, its ability to convert from a sophisticated smart phone to a simple-to-use ‘feature’ phone, just by using its smart cover, is ground breaking.
"We have no doubt it will appeal to many of An Post Mobile’s customers who currently use a ‘feature’ phone, but want the benefits of a smart phone. When this phone is combined with our Unlimited Prepay plan, with all calls, texts and data included for just €15, it’s a very attractive offer for retirees.”
