When local musician Sean Mathews and poet Anthony Matthews got together last December to turn one of Anthony’s poems into a Christmas song they underestimated the length of time it would take to get it published.
The two Matthewses (if you’re from Drogheda you’ll know that’s pronounced ‘Matchesses’) are not related “not even distantly” says Sean which is probably why Sean has only one 't' in his surname while Anthony has two.
Sean and Anthony worked together last year to produce a song called ‘First Christmas Day in Heaven’ based on a poem written by Anthony which is about a meeting of friends and like minds in heaven - one that is especially reflected upon at Christmas.
It did the rounds on social media this time last year and was very much liked but it wasn’t ready to download in time for Christmas 2021. Anyway, it’s ready now and will be released for download from all the usual channels this Friday (Dec.2). As they say, good things are worth waiting for.

Seán Mathews, a down to earth folk singer/songwriter from Drogheda describes his songs as ‘Urban Folk’ a broad term that describes his songs about people living in built up areas with all the good and bad that it brings.
He explores the link between rural and urban life with his choice of lyrics and song topics. He brings the rural world to enrich life for those living in the urban world.
Anthony is a prolific and imaginative poet who draws inspiration from local pubs, community events, news stories and characters. Once inspired, his words flow swiftly and effortlessly within hours of something happening and a theme he often returns to is that of hope with lines such as:
‘The hope we have has never turned to fear, I just look and you’re no longer here’
Between writing poems for Ashling Murphy whose brutal murder touched the heart of the nation, Charlie Bird who raised millions for Motor Neuron Disease, and writing songs, Anthony Matthews has mined a rich seam of creativity for his second collection of poems and “small stories” called Another Stroll Down Memory Lane.
‘First Christmas Day in Heaven’ was recorded and produced by Eurovision finalist Gerry Simpson and the photography was by the late Jimmy Weldon who sadly will be spending his first Christmas in Heaven this year.
