A national campaign to help keep LGBT+ people safe when they are out socialising is being launched in Drogheda this coming weekend.
LGBT rights campaigner and leader of the Pride movement in Drogheda, Peter James Nugent, says the initiative, it’s called “Ask for Peter James”, is an LGBTQ+ Safety Code similar to the “Ask For Angela” safety campaign that allows people to discreetly signal if they feel unsafe or threatened on a date or night out.

“To support and protect members of the LGBTQ+ community, our venue proudly participates in the “Ask for Peter James” initiative.
“If you’re feeling unsafe, harassed, or need discreet assistance, simply approach a staff member and ask for Peter James. Our team is trained to help you get to a safe place or contact authorities if needed — no questions asked. Your safety is our priority.
If you support this campaign please make a small donation to help with the cost of printing the posters by making a donation on GoFundMe. All the posters will be printed at CTI in Drogheda.
Display pride flags, inclusive signage, and initiatives like “Ask for Peter James” to signal safety and allyship.
Use gender-neutral bathrooms where possible.
Train all employees on LGBTQ+ sensitivity, how to handle harassment or inappropriate behaviour, and what to do when someone uses a safety code like “Ask for Peter James.”
Post and enforce a clear anti-discrimination policy—make it known that homophobia, transphobia, and harassment will not be tolerated.
Empower staff to discreetly assist patrons who feel unsafe—offering options like moving to a safe space, calling a cab, or contacting security/ Garda
Host LGBTQ+ nights, drag shows, or queer open mics. These foster community while showing your venue is a welcoming space.
