“The days of the political dinosaurs are over, new ideas are needed to get Drogheda moving forward”

It’s been one of the worst kept secrets ever but well-known community worker and former SF Councillor Paddy McQuillan has finally announced that he is to put his name forward once again as a candidate in the local elections. But this time as an Independent.

Following discussions with many different sectors of the Drogheda community and having received very positive feedback, Paddy says: “There is an appetite out there for real change and I believe I have the experience and the energy to deliver it.”

“People are fed up with the same old faces mouthing the same old sound bites” he added.

During recent discussions with the people of Drogheda including members of community groups, community activists and the business sector, Paddy said that many areas of concern have been expressed to him time and time again.

To sum up just a few of those concerns:

  • Yet again we are being invited to vote for the same old faces. There are people currently serving as councillors that my father, who passed away almost 20 years ago, might have voted for.
  • I believe that new voices and new ideas are needed in order for our town to move forward. The days of the political dinosaur are over. My conversations with community leaders and activists back this up. A fresh approach is needed and it is needed now
  • Drogheda, the largest town in Ireland, is on the verge of becoming a ‘political dynasty town’. Along with a great many others, I believe that it is seriously detrimental to our town to allow itself continue on the loop of voting for individuals on the basis that a family member served before them. A younger version of the ‘same old same old’ is to nobody’s benefit. Drogheda deserves better.
  • Constant in-house bickering and fighting. Councillors do not speak to each other. All too common in local politics we hear “I won’t vote for that because he or she is with [such and such] party”. I have first-hand experience of this from my time serving with a political party on Louth County Council between 2009 and 2014. This is a seriously unproductive approach to local politics and hasn’t gone unnoticed by the people of our town. Where is the recognition that What Is Good For Drogheda, Is Good For All Of Us. All councillors should work together for the good of the town. If elected, I promise to work with all parties and independents if the outcome is a positive one for the town.

"Many people around Drogheda know me. They know me from my work over many years with community organisations such as Boomerang and The Red Door project.

"They know me from my work with community events such as the Drogheda Raft Race and the Drogheda Summer League.  They know that I have five years’ experience as a councillor under my belt. I know the system. I know how it works. I have worked in the community sector of Drogheda for almost twenty years now.

I am putting my name forward to offer the people of Drogheda another choice when they go out to cast their vote on May 24th. I offer a new approach to local politics; a better voice speaking for the people of Drogheda. Given the chance I will fight tooth and nail for Drogheda."
