Firefighters are tonight tackling a major blaze in Donaghy’s Mill,
The fire broke out in the 19th century industrial building shortly after 6.00 pm this evening and caught hold very quickly sending flames and a huge plume of smoke into the evening sky which could be seen for miles.
It is not known at this stage how the fire started in the building which has been derelict for several years.

Nor is it known whether there was anyone in the building at the time although it is frequented by drug takers and drinkers. It was also used by rough sleepers for shelter.
Although the building had been neglected for years it had been earmarked by Louth County Council to play a central role in it’s Westgate Vision plan for urban regeneration of the Westgate area of the town.
It had been proposed at one stage to convert it to a hotel with an entrance drive connecting it to the town under the Bridge of Peace. Such is the ferocity of the blaze though, these plans seem likely to be in jeopardy now.
