Louth County Council’s Severe Weather Action Team continue to monitor the situation regarding the current multi-weather hazard event.

Over the past week, representatives from Louth County Council attended national briefings and preparations were made in advance of the ongoing cold snap which has led to freezing temperatures.

Although Louth managed to avoid heavy snowfall at the weekend, meaning that a response in terms of clearing snow on the road network was not required, Louth County Council has its Winter Service Plan in place and is operationally prepared to respond in the event of winter weather on the principal road network within the county.

Central to the Winter Service Plan is the precautionary treatment of approximately 450km of National and Regional roads in the county to ensure that the main road network is kept free of frost, ice, and snow, as far as is reasonably practicable. Snow ploughs were, and remain, ready to be used in the event of any significant snow fall impacting on the county.

Winter gritting on the county’s six Winter Maintenance routes has taken place nightly, including double runs each night since last Wednesday. Gritting will continue for the duration of the current cold snap. Details of the six Winter Maintenance routes can be found on the Louth County Council website.

Motorists are advised that even where roads are gritted, driving conditions can be hazardous and motorists should drive with caution, be aware of other road users and allow extra time for their journey.

In addition, Louth County Council crews have treated footpaths and plazas in the centre of Ardee, Drogheda, and Dundalk to facilitate safe pedestrian movement in the major urban centres.

The Council’s Housing Maintenance team is continuing to respond to customer issues in relation to council housing stock, particularly emergency issues relating to electrical, heating, and plumbing issues.

A cold-weather initiative is also in place in relation to Homelessness Services. The initiative is a multi-agency protocol to address the needs of persons sleeping rough throughout the winter months, and especially during extreme weather events.

As well as dealing with the cold snap, a Louth County Council emergency crew was on hand to rescue a horse which was on the loose in Bridge Street, Dundalk on Saturday night. Thankfully, the horse was taken to safety at the Town Hall and successfully returned to its owner.

A Status Orange Low Temperature warning has been issued for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster, and Connacht from 6pm tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8th to 11am on Thursday, January 9th.
