Light a candle tomorrow night for World Suicide Prevention Day

Front Page

Cycle Against Suicide is calling on people to come together for the 'Lighting of Lights’ at 8pm on World Suicide Prevention Day, this coming Thursday September 10th, as a symbol of empathy, hope and support for each other during these difficult times.

Traditionally a day to honour those who have lost their lives to suicide, this year’s Suicide Prevention Day takes on even greater significance because of the immense toll that the pandemic has taken on people’s physical health and emotional wellbeing.

Oisin Rouxel, the Communications  Co-Ordinator of Cycle Against Suicide says that the physical, emotional, social and economic impact that the pandemic has had across Ireland is aggravating mental health challenges and exacerbating the risk of suicide.

“In these difficult times, this 'Lighting of Lights', honours those who have died through suicide. Those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Those battling mental health challenges. And all people in Ireland as we stand together, united as one, to fight and overcome this pandemic” he said.

“This 'Lighting of Lights' stands as our beacon of hope, shining bright in the midst of darkness, bringing hope in the midst of despair, as we stand together in empathy, hope and support and to ensure that we all come through this crisis together.

"We are asking the nation to become involved in the  'Lighting of Lights'  by lighting a candle with family or a friend post your pictures on social media using the hashtags; #LightingTheLight  #ItsOKNotToFeelOK  @cycleagainstsuicide
