Problems for wheelchair users and people with buggies for last six months

Regular rail commuters will know that the lifts to the footbridge between platforms at Drogheda Railway station have been out of action for over six months.

This has caused major problems for elderly people, wheelchair users, passengers with heavy luggage and also parents with children in prams and buggies for whom getting to the correct platform has been difficult if not impossible.

According to Barry Kenny, Irish Rail’s Corporate Communications Manager, though, the problem is to be fixed in the next few weeks.

Mr. Barry told Drogheda TD Fergus O’Dowd that Irish Rail was sorry for the extended issue with the lift at Drogheda Station which has been unavailable since January and which requires complete replacement.

“The installation of replacement lifts will take place at the beginning of September.  In the interim, we are operating as many services as possible through the main station platform to ensure access” he said.

“We can arrange for specific services to call to this platform also if customers contact Drogheda Station at 041-9838749 in advance of travel.

Deputy O’Dowd, who has received several complaints about the lack of a working lift at the station, said that it was an unacceptable length of time for persons with disabilities to be left with limited access.

“I'm delighted this will now be rectified and a long term solution put in place” he said.

Unfortunately the lifts will not be replaced before the Fleadh Cheoil because, Mr. Kenny says, “… it is actually replacement units which are being sourced which will not be available by then.

“We will continue to ensure that services are prioritised to/from the main platform whenever possible, and alter paths to access the main platform whenever required.”
