Important implications for Drogheda in County budget – Pio Smith

Councillor Pio Smith says that the recent budget meetings in Louth County Council had important implications for Drogheda and how the town develops over the next twelve months.

“From my perspective, I have worked on having municipal football pitches developed for our town” the Labour Councillor told Drogheda Life.

“As many people are aware there is a large demand from football teams across the area for facilities that allow children and adults to participate in sporting activities.

“A number of years ago Louth County Council identified land and obtained funding to seed the land to develop pitches, however the project stalled due to problems with the access road.

In Budget 2021, €500,000 has now been put aside to address the issue of the access road with €200,000 being spent in 2021 and €300,000 to be spent in 2022.

“This is a significant advancement of the project and will lead to the council providing badly needed municipal sporting facilities for Drogheda” Cllr. Smith said.

But that’s not all. Drogheda Swimming Pool and the Lourdes Stadium are to receive a further upgrade with approximately €300,000 being allocated for spending in 2021.

“Drogheda is now a Failte Ireland designated town and €666,565 was allocated in the county budget for spending on promoting tourism in our town.

Also, money has been made available to continue work on the Boyne Walk area over the next twelve months, €1.4 million will be spent on St Dominic’s Bridge, and consultants have been appointed to progress the next stage of the West Gate Vision.

“All of the above is in addition to the €12 million redevelopment of our civic offices which will see €6.7 million spent in 2021 and investment in social housing in a number of areas around Drogheda” Smith concluded.
