Iarnród Éireann’s fleet maintenance Depot in Drogheda will play a major role in the newly launched Dart+ Expansion Programme and today the company has announced that it has exciting job opportunities – and they’re based right here in Drogheda.

Due to the major expansion plans, the national rail company is now hiring new Electrical and Mechanical Craftworkers at its Train Maintenance Depot at Drogheda to meet the growing needs of the business.

Drogheda Depot, purpose built in 2003 is Iarnród Eireann’s centre of engineering excellence and responsible for the total maintenance support of the Diesel Multiple Unit fleet as well as providing maintenance support to the Intercity Railcar fleet. In total, it maintains a fleet of almost 170 carriages.

A team of 80 Iarnród Éireann staff and specialised contractors complete all tasks required to present clean, safe and reliable trains to operate along the Dublin Commuter and North/ East.

Highly skilled craftworker teams maintaining the fleet consists of Electricians, Fitters, Mechanics and Coachbuilder - Bodymakers who are trained to provide the range of multi-skilled competencies required to undertake all aspects of modern train maintenance.

Duties include routine running maintenance and servicing, defect repairs, modifications and heavy maintenance overhaul across the full range of specialist high tech systems on the fleet including diesel engines, transmissions, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, air conditioning and can bus control technology.

The fleets themselves feature a wide range of complex and modern technology. Each vehicle is powered by an individual Diesel engine and transmission to provide traction, and a separate auxiliary generator engine which supplies Electrical Power for each carriage. All traction engines are overhauled at the purpose-built engine overhaul facility at the depot.

The depot also incorporates a specialist Electronic Repair Facility, responsible for the repair and overhaul of all Electronic Control Systems fitted to various Irish Rail Fleets nationwide.

The in-house maintenance teams are supported by Train Technical Specialists, Remote Diagnostics, Data Analytics and Production Planning. On site Safety and Facilities management ensures the safe and efficient operation of the facility and the welfare of staff and visitors.

Lean management and Continuous Improvement is core to the operation of the facility and International Best Practice is evident throughout.

The depot itself consists of two Servicing slab roads where trains receive 48 hour maintenance (pit-stop) inspections as they arrive to the depot.

Within the large maintenance shed there are two elevated roads of eight car length designed to permit access to complete maintenance and inspection under the vehicle.

There is also one road where the full four-car train can be quickly lifted into the air to allow modular parts to be removed from underneath.

Roof access is also available where staff can access the roof and roof mounted components such as HVAC. A crane provides a convenient method of removing roof mounted components if required. An underfloor computerised CNC wheel lathe is installed to re-profile wheels on the train when required.

Drogheda Depot will play a major role in Iarnród Éireann’s newly launched Dart+ Expansion Program, being responsible for maintaining its newly delivered Electric and Battery-electric powered vehicles from 2025. This new Dart+ fleet will be the largest and most sustainable public transport fleet in Irish history.
