I failed my driving test without even moving the car!

Win up to €350 with your amusing motoring memories

Many moons ago, when I was in my late teens, I drove to Dundalk with my mother riding shotgun to do my driving test.

Never having driven in Dundalk before it took a while to find the test centre but we got there in time and my mother took herself off to do some sightseeing or shopping.

Whilst I was in the test centre it had rained so when I emerged chatting nervously with the tester the car was wet.

I got into the drivers seat and the tester into the passenger side, buckled up the seat belts and I made a big thing of checking the rear mirror and adjusting it etc and then I turned the ignition key and switched on the windscreen wipers.

The wiper on my side worked perfectly but the one on his side didn’t budge, not even a quiver, it was stuck solid.

“Stop the engine!” were the only words he spoke before we got back into the test centre and he informed me that I’d failed because the vehicle was  not roadworthy.

There was no point arguing with him, so I sat and waited for my mother to return and we drove home.

I never even got to show off my prowess at reversing around corners and performing three-point turns.

Annoyingly the wipers worked all the way back to Drogheda.
