History was made today with the announcement that The Drogheda Branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland has been given the go-ahead to build a day care centre for which they have been fundraising for over 20 years.
In a statement issued this evening, the chairman of the local branch Noel Heaney said:
“At a recent meeting of the board of directors of Alzheimer Society of Ireland it was agreed to give Drogheda branch the go ahead to build their long awaited Day-care centre in the town.
“As chairman of the branch I’m delighted with this news. A lot of hard work has been done over the past 20 odd years by committee members and volunteers in Drogheda.

“This new centre will allow us to cater for 20 to 25 people on a daily basis and will give much needed support to people living with dementia and their families.
“I want to thank everyone involved in this great project, the local committee who work tirelessly, the local media who have always given us coverage in print and radio. Louth County Council and their officials who fully backed us at all times. The C.E.O. of Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland who has been a huge help. Finally the people of Drogheda and surrounding areas who continued to support us all these years and encouraged us on this journey.
“I want to remember Patsy Rice and Jenny Heaney who passed away this year. I think they will be happy looking down on us today.”
