Des Grant, Chairman of Old Drogheda Society and Millmount Museum, with a copy of the recently republished book ‘The Streets and Lanes of Drogheda.’
One of Drogheda’s most sought-after books, 'The Streets and Lanes of Drogheda' written by the eminent local historian James Garry, has been republished by the Old Drogheda Society.
Originally published in 1996 it gives details on the origins and history of over 600 streets and lanes in the town in alphabetical order.
The Chairperson of the Old Drogheda Society Des Grant said, “This book is a masterpiece and it seems like every tourist to Millmount Museum asks for it but it was out of print for a long time.”
“It charts the history of this ancient 800-year-old town and is pretty much a ‘must-have’ book in every household in the town” He said.

The book has been reprinted to celebrate the Old Drogheda Society’s 60th anniversary and Millmount Museum’s 50th anniversary, as the late Jim Garry was a founding member of both organisations.
The first edition was printed in a green hardback with gold-foil lettering and this, the fourth edition, is also printed in the same high-quality way.
The second edition in 1999 and the third edition in 2009 were both paperbacks but many people wanted the hardback version the Old Drogheda Society discovered.
Des said, “I don’t think anyone can truly say they know Drogheda until they have read this book, Jim painstakingly researched how every street and nook and cranny in the area got its name.”
He added that Jim Garry was one of the inspirational historians who wrote several books on Drogheda and surrounding towns and the Jim Garry Way was named after him.
It includes many unusual places such as; Millers Lane, Levin’s Bridge, Kezers Lane, Rosemary Lane, Jockeys Pass, Judy’s Alley, Hungry Hall Road, Dove Stream and Glew House among the hundreds of entries.
This fourth edition has been limited to 500 books and the cost of printing it has been supported by Louth County Council.
The book can be bought at the Millmount Museum shop which houses a large collection of books about Drogheda or ordered directly from the museum or the Old Drogheda Society for posting or even local delivery if needed.
The cost of the 123-page book is currently at a special offer price of €25 and all proceeds go to the Old Drogheda Society.
