Money will allow for a full footpath from the beach to the village centre

Labour Councillor Michelle Hall has welcomed the grant for extension of footpaths to Seapoint Beach on Strand Road, Termonfeckin.

In total, €358,000 was allocated to Termonfeckin and Castlebellingham for footpaths in 2021 as part of the Active Travel Measures funding.

"This is exciting news for Termonfeckin residents and visitors to Seapoint Beach” Cllr Hall said, “ it will allow for a full footpath from the beach to the village centre.

“It will complement the €100,000 Town and Village Renewal Scheme funding that was allocated in October 2019, which would initially see about 1km of footpath installed.

“This road is quite dangerous with some bad bends causing pedestrians to take extreme caution or forced to drive instead, as there are no traffic calming measures in place here.

“The first phase of the footpath was due to commence early this year but due to Level 5 restrictions, it was postponed. Louth County Council have said they hope the work will begin once lockdown lifts.

“For residents of Termonfeckin, it can't come quick enough” Councillor Hall added.

“It is also encouraging to see mobility plans for Termonfeckin, Drogheda and Clogherhead in the pipeline, as we need more pedestrians and cycle routes to ensure we meet our Climate Action targets and give everyone an option to leave the car at home.

“Healthy, cheap and safe modes of transport are important for sustainable communities and helps ensure accessibility for all, including people with mobility difficulties."
