Rossiter calls for rethink on delaying pedestrianisation trials

The Green Party representative for Drogheda Urban, David Rossiter, has called for a radical plan to save the Drogheda hospitality sector. As Level 3 restrictions limit indoor hospitality, he is appealing for a rethink on delaying pedestrianisation trials.

"We need a radical outdoor plan for Drogheda if businesses are going to survive the winter months” he said.

“With level 3 restrictions prohibiting indoor dining and indoor drinking in pubs and cafés, businesses are being left to fend for themselves for adequate outdoor space. Those with courtyards and public spaces near their shopfront may be able to just about break-even, but for everyone else, it's potentially a disaster.

“As such, we need to see more ambition on plans to introduce pedestrianisation in Drogheda.

“I would propose that Louth County Council seriously examine widening the trials to Narrow West Street and perhaps either Laurence Street or Shop Street. With the right traffic planning and communications to the wider public, it can be a success.

“Ireland has milder winters compared to some of our European neighbours so with the right support and outdoor equipment we can make this work.

“Alongside pedestrianisation we need a national and local campaign to encourage people to buy from local independent retailers.

“With the Christmas shopping period almost upon us, I fear local independent traders may be closing their shutters for good if we all shop online due to COVID restrictions."
