Members of the LoveDrogheda Business Improvement District (BID) were taken aback by the surprise announcement over the weekend by their Chairman Geoff Fitzpatrick that he intends to step down as Chairman and to step back from his involvement in the BID.
Announcing his intentions to members of the Board, Geoff, who is involved in many other progressive organisations locally such as the annual Young Innovators competition and the Boyne Trail Committee, said that while he had enjoyed every moment of the BID campaign and the successful launch of the company, regrettably he could not maintain the same level of involvement due to his own business commitments at Fitz Scientific.
“The two and a half years it took to get where we are now was a great experience” he said, “but now I find I have business commitments of my own that have to take precedence”.
“We have come a long way. We have an excellent CEO in Trevor Connolly who is doing an outstanding job, with limited resources and a very challenging business environment. I know the LOVEDROGHEDA BID will continue as a force for positive change representing Drogheda's business community'.

Reacting to the surprise announcement fellow board member and PRO, Niall Kierans, said: 'We owe Geoff a great debt of gratitude. Without his drive and commitment Drogheda would not have the BID established. Launching the BID involved a gargantuan level of work from a relatively small crew and Geoff was at the forefront from day one, he will be sorely missed.
“I can only wish Geoff the best for the future and draw some comfort from knowing that Geoff will remain not too far away to give his valued advice when sought.”
Another board member, Jackie Jolliffe of the Crafty Fox in Laurence Street, said that Geoff had brought his drive, knowledge, enthusiasm and determination to the BID which made him a huge asset to it.
“He put in a Trojan effort that cannot be underestimated. In getting us this far we can see a big and bright future for Drogheda” she said.
BID CEO Trevor Connelly, said that Geoff had put in a huge amount of work into the establishment of the BID for Drogheda and his stewardship and guidance as chairperson had been truly appreciated.
“He helped lay the foundations for many projects which will prove to be successful and assist in the future prosperity of Drogheda. I wish Geoff every success in his future endeavours with Fitz Scientific” he said.
“Working with Geoff Fitzpatrick as part of the LOVEDROGHEDA business improvement district team has been inspirational, his passion for all things Drogheda is relentless” Valerie Sherlock said.
“He loves everything about our wonderful town and will stop at nothing to ensure its development is managed. His strong views in challenging complacency and belief in working together for our common goal to make “Drogheda a better place to work, play and live” inspired all of us.
“Geoff is a huge loss to LOVEDROGHEDA but to coin his own phrase “onward'' the team will carry on to develop our town for the better. Thank you Geoff.”
LoveDrogheda BID will now organise the election by the Board of a new Chairperson to fill in the vacancy created by Geoff’s departure.
The LoveDrogheda BID will continue as before with a number of projects already in the pipeline details of which will announced in the coming months.
