This recognition confirms that the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre meets the NCCP’s Best Practice Guidance for Community Cancer Support Centres, which ensures consistent, professional and effective support for people affected by cancer, as well as their families, friends and carers.

Full membership is a testament to the dedication, professionalism and compassion of our entire team; staff, volunteers, facilitators and board members, who uphold the highest standards in community-based cancer support services.

Supporting the whole person – not just the diagnosis

The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre recognises that a cancer diagnosis brings more than physical challenges. Many people experience anxiety, fear, isolation and uncertainty following their diagnosis which may have a huge impact on their quality of life. That is why they offer a wide range of free services designed to support not only the person diagnosed with cancer but also their loved ones.

Their services include:

  • Psychological & Emotional Support- counselling, support groups, mindfulness and self-care courses
  • Information & Education – monthly information talks and one-to-one education about cancer, treatment pathways, cancer prevention, healthy living and the emotional effects of cancer
  • Evidence-Based Survivorship Programmes - such as Cancer Thrive & Survive
  • Complementary Therapies & Exercise Classes - e.g. reflexology, yoga, sound bath, relaxation classes, walking group
  • Physiotherapy & Lymphoedema Services – specialist service to help manage cancer related symptoms, including lymphoedema
  • Practical Supports - financial guidance, legal advice, referral to transport services
  • Wig, Prothesis & Bra Fitting Services – professional fitting appointments available in a private, supportive setting
  • Peer Support – connecting clients with others who have lived experience of a cancer diagnosis and also linking family members and friends
  • Welcoming Spacewhere clients can feel safe and supported

The National Cancer Strategy 2017–2026 identifies psychosocial support as an integral part of high-quality cancer care. Community Cancer Support Centres like the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre help bridge a critical gap in healthcare by offering timely, local and professionally led support. The NCCP model recognises the importance of integrating acute hospital care with community-based psycho-oncology services, ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.

A Community Effort

The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre is a registered charity and relies entirely on fundraising and donations to deliver its services. We are deeply grateful to our local community, volunteers and supporters who continue to make our work possible.

For over 20 years, the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre has been a centre of hope and strength for people living with and beyond cancer in the North East region. Full NCCP membership affirms that the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre provides compassionate, professional support and care that changes lives.
