Former Mayor of Drogheda Michael O’Dowd says that the town needs to ensure the full implementation of Articles 9 and 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

“We need to vindicate the rights of persons with disabilities, the sick, and the elderly to live independently, be included in the community, and access public facilities and services” he told Drogheda Life.

“I believe the top priorities here in this town should be to enhance footpaths, improve transport access, and ensure accessible housing.

“Footpaths need to be safe and accessible for all, including those using wheelchairs, mobility aids, and parents with strollers. Safe footpaths are just as important as safe cycling routes and deserve the same level of investment.

“Also, accessible housing is crucial for enabling independent living. Parents with children with disabilities face unique challenges in finding suitable housing. Council homes need to be made available, especially bungalows.

“Creating an inclusive and accessible environment in Drogheda is imperative. Providing equal access to transportation and essential services is fundamental to making Drogheda a place where everyone, including the sick, elderly, and families with children with disabilities, can thrive.

O’Dowd instanced the situation at Drogheda Bus Depot where he says the current lack of accessibility restricts the independence and mobility of many community members.

“This week, in a discussion with Bus Eireann management, I received a commitment that they would activate a drop-off point opposite McDonald's at the rear of the depot” O’Dowd said.

Mr. O'Dowd says he also received a commitment to include the depot in the Travel Assistance Scheme (TAS), which provides personalised assistance to those requiring extra help while traveling but is currently only in operation in Cork.
