Every dog has his day and for Monte, the Toy Poodle belonging to Drogheda sisters Lydia and Michaela Stowe, that day was last Saturday when he was crowned Ireland’s Top Madra!

Lydia contacted Drogheda Life this morning to say “a massive thank you” to all our readers who voted for Monte

“Monte only went and won and has been officially crowned Ireland's Next Top Madra 2018!!” Lydia said.

“Out of 650 initial entries and then 22 finalists, we don't think we could have done it without the local support.”

Michaela added: “I can’t believe it, I’m so happy! This is the first competition Monte has ever entered and we think he’s the cutest doggy in the world.”

The Drogheda native fought off tough oppawsition from some of the finest pooches in the country, receiving 21.1% of the votes to scoop the coveted prize.

Monte, who is one year old, will now be accompanied by his owners to enjoy a magnificent two night stay and a fine dining experience at the pet-friendly Harvey’s Point hotel in Donegal.

The top dog, who is quite mischievous and loves turning his water bowl into a swimming pool and stealing snacks, will also be treated to a private photoshoot with Pawtrait pet photography in Wicklow.

The results of the competition, which is sponsored by the new Dacia Duster, was announced at the Pet Expo at the National Show Centre in Swords on Saturday (November 3).

Along with the 21 finalists and their dogs, Monte made his TV debut on the Ray D’Arcy show last Saturday.

According to competition organisers RSVP Live, “The Pawsecco was flowing and the pupperazi were out in force as the pups strutted their stuff on the catwalk!”

Jane Lundon, Online Editor of RSVP Live and the competition organiser, said: “This is the fourth year of Ireland’s Next Top Madra and it’s getting bigger every time. This year we had over 650 entries.

“Kayla from RSVP, Carla from Dacia Ireland and I whittled it down to the top 50 and we let the readers choose the winner by voting on our website. Every dog has a story. We had a lot of rescue dogs, we had dogs who had helped families. It was so hard to choose.”
