Drogheda publican pleads with the Taoiseach to allow pubs re-open

As the Cabinet meets to discuss plans to leave level 5 Covid restrictions next week, local publican Brian Browning has written to the Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar, all of the other party leaders and all local TDs pleading the case for the immediate re-opening of pubs and restaurants.

Brian, who is the proprietor of four pubs in Drogheda, told Drogheda Life that he was driven to write his letter because of what he perceives as a “total lack of respect” being shown to publicans and restaurateurs who he said had complied with all restrictions that had been asked of them.

He says that it is in the interest of staff as much as customers that pubs are run in a safe manner and also claims that there is no clear evidence that the pub or restaurant sector had contributed to the spread of the virus.

Here is his letter in full:

Good Morning to you all.

No doubt you are having difficulties in deciding what to do next for our Pub/Restaurant Business.

As you are aware there is no evidence that operating a pub or restaurant has in any way caused a spike in Covid 19 cases despite what Michael Martin suggested yesterday!

In fact this Government has yet to publish the facts as to why home gatherings are a major source of spreading this Virus.

99% of pub/restaurant operators are true professionals who know how to operate their business despite all the restrictions imposed on them due to Covid 19.

Our management and staff are always committed to providing a professional service in a safe manner.

Our staff want to get back doing what they do best....not stuck at home wondering what’s going to happen next and in turn their mental health is at risk!!!!!

Our staff want to get back earning their full wage....not subsidies

Our staff have been and are still committed to working with the additional safety measures to ensure our clients feel safe and protected at all times while on our premises........we received many compliments after opening from the first lock down for the measures we implemented and the manner in which we ensured they were adhered to.

Our costs associated with adding these extra measures will not be covered by current grants on offer.

You politicians remind us how well we are doing by being in this players!!!!!

What have you done to support this team drop in salaries your end what a shame!

On Friday you will deliver your verdict on the next stage.....but before you do consider the facts.

  1. No clear evidence that our trade has spread this virus
  2. No respect being shown towards the thousands of professional people who deliver a wonder service to our clients countrywide in a safe environment.

This is not about turnover, its about getting back to work!

Respect our wishes and above all respect our trade and all those who go about their job in delivering first class service to our people at home and those that visit our experience the first class product that we offer in our Trade!

I am a pub/restaurant owner in Drogheda employing over 40 people!
