The second Drogheda Pride Festival was launched earlier today with a ceremony at Millmount which culminated in the rainbow flag being raised at the highest point in the town.

Drogheda Pride founder and Festival Manager Peter James Nugent welcomed everyone to the ceremony and introduced the guest speaker, Sinn Fein Cllr. Joanna Byrne who spoke on the festival’s theme for this year which is social inclusion, Cllr. Byrne also did the honours at the tape cutting ceremony.

Following a Poetry recital by Jeffrey Nielsen it was time to brave the strong wind that was blowing around MIllmount for the flag raising ceremony and the release of multi-coloured balloons into the skies above the town.

This afternoon Festival activities include a family fun day at the Barbican Centre which is followed tonight by an official opening party at the Weavers bar and venue from 8.00pm.
