Drogheda LGBTQ Support Group celebrates fifth Birthday

Front Page

The 2019 Drogheda Pride Parade makes its way up Laurence Street. On right is the gay rights activist, Drogheda man Brendan Fay who now lives in New York with his husband Tom Moulton.

The Drogheda LGBTQ Support and Social Group is celebrating five years in existence this Thursday, October 15th, and they have much to celebrate

Since October 2015, when the group was established by Peter James Nugent, life for LGBTQI youth and adults in Drogheda has become much easier with many prejudices and taboos overcome so that people can feel free to express themselves and feel safe.

Drogheda LGBTQ Support and Social Group runs a weekly support group every Thursday evening in the Barbican Centre aimed at supporting adults with a safe space, confidential information, peer support and professional support if required.

The highlight of the last five years has undoubtedly been the 2019 Pride Parade, the first ever Pride Parade in Drogheda, which was a resounding success and a great day out for everyone, both gay and straight.

Unfortunately the 2020 Drogheda Pride has had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 and the birthday celebrations will also have to be curtailed to an online event.

“We will have some birthday wishes to share with you from our friends around Ireland some on an international level also” Peter told Drogheda Life.

“Join us on Facebook and Instagram for more information on weekly support and support throughout covid 19 will still continue.

“Last year it was amazing to see Drogheda fly the pride flags in their homes, business and really made Drogheda special and create awareness.

“Happy 5th Birthday!!”
