Drogheda crime figures down but domestic violence soars

Pandemic affecting crime figures locally, Gardaí kept busy with gang feud

Covid 19 is affecting almost every aspect of life in Drogheda and the statistics reported by Garda Superintendent Andrew Watters to yesterday’s meeting of the Drogheda Joint Policing Committee indicate that it is having a big impact on levels of criminal activity also.

Superintendent Watters reported a 91% reduction in robbery from premises in the year to October 4 compared to the same period last year. There were just two cases detected as compared to 23 last year and Superintendent Watters said this drop was “definitely Covid related” presumably because many premises were closed.

Theft from vehicles was down from 97 to 48, a drop of 51% and this too could be put down to Covid-19 in that many people were working from home and their vehicles were parked outside their houses or in their garages all day.

Of course being cooped up at home all day has increased tensions in many families and unfortunately this tension has often escalated into domestic violence. This was reflected in the crime figures with an increase of 59% in “minor” assaults recorded in the period.

This increase would be borne out by community organisations such as women and children’s services who often have to deal with the outcomes.

Arrests under Section 15 of The Misuse of Drugs Act (sale or supply) increased from 64 last year to 86 in 2020 which is an increase of 34% but surprisingly arrests for possession for own use saw a 1% drop from 166 to 164.

Under the traffic section of the report, thankfully there were no deaths reported in either year, serious injuries were down one to three in 2020 but driving under the influence cases rose from 43 to 51.

Drogheda is still in the throes of a vicious feud between sadistic thugs from different gangs and this has accounted for a lot of Garda activity during the year under the special Operation Stratus which commenced in October 2018.

So far this year Operation Stratus Drogheda Garda personnel have been involved in 1,199 policing checkpoints, 6,107 patrols and 956 searches under the misuse of Drugs Act.

Clogherhead

In Clogherhead burglaries have risen by 250% but this figure is not as bad as it seems because the figures are small. Last year there were just four such offences in the area which rose to 14 this year. Superintendent Watters said that this rise was due mainly to the activities of one individual who is now in custody.

Other notable statistics in the Clogherhead area are a 200 % increase of people arrested for possession of drugs for their own use, up from 2 last year to 6 in 2020, and four people caught driving under the influence up from zero last year.
