The boardwalk and Boyne Trail where the explposive device was found yesterday is hugely popular with walkers and cyclists but has also been the target for vandals, the 200 metre section above was damaged by arsonists in 2019.

The Defence Forces Press Office has confirmed to Drogheda Life that the suspected bomb discovered by a member of the public yesterday at Oldbridge was indeed a viable explosive device.

The device, which resembled a mortar, was found by a member of the public out walking the popular boardwalk at around 11 o’clock yesterday morning.

Gardaí cordoned off the area and requested that an Army Bomb Disposal Team attend to investigate and the team arrived at the scene at approximately 4.45pm

“On arrival a cordon was established and maintained for the duration of the operation” the team spokesperson said.

“A viable device was identified and a controlled explosion was carried out. The scene was rendered safe and the team departed the scene just after 8.20pm

“Should members of the public encounter suspicious items, or hazardous substances, they are advised to maintain a safe distance and inform An Garda Síochána.”

No injuries were reported.

Gardai in Ashbourne say investigations are ongoing.
