Boyne AC’s successful 2019 couch to 5k group were the real stars of the recent Connor-Mallon memorial 5k road race and 3k family fun run.
More than thirty of them completed the distance under the mentorship and guidance of the more seniors members, with smiles and cheers of joy having completed their first 5k, most have already signed up for the next challenge.
The Connor-Mallon memorial 5k road race and 3k family fun run took place on Sunday 1st September past, hosted by Boyne AC in memory of the late Harry Mallon who passed away in 2015 and the late Willie Connor who passed away in 2017.
Willie was a founding member of the club and served on the committee for many years. He regularly coached in the club and always flew the flag for Boyne AC.

Harry was an integral part of Boyne AC in the years preceding his death and served as honorary president, a role befitting of such a great person. Always there with a friendly smile and words of encouragement to every athlete, first or last, Harry’s presence was always assured at any Boyne AC event.
To honour these great men, Boyne AC have held a road race in their memory since 2016, and this year, like previous ones didn’t disappoint.
With over 300 people running the 5k and with another 160 doing the family 3k fun run numbers were well up on previous years.
Jonathon Escalante from Cambridge and Coleridge AC won the race in a time of 15.18, breaking the course record, and first Lady over the line was Amy Bulman in 19.25.
There was great numbers taking part from all the local athletics clubs and gyms, with Cilles AC taking home the men’s team prize and the home team from Boyne AC taking the ladies team prize, thanks to super runs from Catherine Tiernan Bell, Nicola Veale, who also took 2nd in her category, and Sarah Jane Ruddy.
