HIQA has confirmed to Senator Ged Nash that the Cottage Hospital has secured its formal registration as a transitional care unit for a further three years.

"Having worked extremely hard to ensure that the Cottage Hospital remained open as an active healthcare facility, I am pleased to report that HIQA confirmed to me last week that the facility has secured its registration for the next three years, dated from last Thursday, 6th June” Senator Nash said.

"Successive HIQA inspection reports, the most recent being at the end of 2017, recognise the hard work, high level of training and commitment of all staff.

"Worryingly the HIQA inspectors identified consistent issues and in successive inspections around budgetary constraints at the centre which have made it difficult for management to make some of the changes and improvements necessary to make the environment better and more comfortable for patients.

"I understand that some of these issues have been addressed in recent months and that is very welcome indeed.

"However, the allocation of additional finance and in a timely manner to the Cottage is crucial for its long term future and I am again calling on the HSE to publish a long-term, costed plan for the future of this important facility."
