Potential to bring up to €175,000 per week into local economy

Senator Alison Comyn is urging Louth County Council to fast-track a practical and low-cost plan to develop a motorhome and tour bus facility at Merchant’s Quay, Drogheda which she says has the potential to bring up to €175,000 per week into the local economy.

The concept was first developed by Eddie Phelan, CEO and Principal Engineer of VCL Consultants, who identified Merchant’s Quay as an ideal location for accommodating 10 tour buses and 20 motorhomes, just a five-minute walk from the town centre.

“With the Leinster Fleadh coming to Drogheda this July, we need to act now,” said Senator Comyn. “While we still have excellent hotels like Scholars Townhouse Hotel and The Marcy, these alone are not enough to meet the growing demand for tourist accommodation — especially during peak events.”

The proposed facility could offer up to 80 additional bed spaces and welcome hundreds of visitors daily, easing the pressure on traditional accommodation providers. Motorhome tourism continues to grow across Ireland, and Drogheda is ideally placed to tap into this market.

“This is something we can do quickly and cheaply,” Senator Comyn added. “There are several locations already identified — Merchant’s Quay being the preferred option. It's a simple solution that can bring immediate results.”

The benefits go beyond accommodation. Visitors using these facilities are likely to spend locally in shops, restaurants, pubs, and attractions, generating significant revenue and goodwill throughout the town.

“Every bed space we add is a new opportunity for a local business to thrive,” Senator Comyn said. “Now we need to follow through. This is a no-brainer.”
