Two community groups, Hands4Unity CLG and the Indian Family Association, have pledged their support for the work of Drogheda Tidy Towns by committing to maintain the grounds of the former Dominican Church.

Councillor Ejiro O’Hare Stratton officially handed over the keys of the grounds to Mr. Chacko Joseph, representing the Indian Family Association (IFA) yesterday.

Present at the handover was Mr. Eamonn Clinton of Drogheda Tidy Towns, who welcomed the partnership and expressed his appreciation for the continued support from the local community in preserving and enhancing Drogheda’s shared spaces.

This partnership marks a significant step in community-led sustainability and environmental stewardship. As part of the initiative, members of the Indian Family Association and Hands4Unity will care for the grounds and cultivate designated vegetation plots at the rear of the property. These plots will support biodiversity and community gardening efforts, aligning with the broader goals of Drogheda’s Tidy Towns programme.

“This is more than just maintaining a space,” said Cllr O’Hare Stratton. “It’s about empowering local communities to take ownership of our shared environment and celebrating the incredible volunteer spirit that makes Drogheda such a vibrant and welcoming town.”

“The initiative highlights the valuable contributions of Drogheda’s diverse communities in caring for public spaces and enhancing the town’s natural beauty. Volunteers from both IFA and Hands4Unity have long supported local clean-up efforts, community events, and cultural projects, playing a vital role in promoting unity and civic pride.

“As Drogheda continues to grow as an inclusive and sustainable town, collaborations like this remind us that when communities come together, great things happen” Cllr Ejiro O’Hare Stratton said.
