Clogherhead RNLI volunteers launched the Shannon class all-weather lifeboat at approximately 4.30 p.m. on Sunday (June 16), following a request from The Coast Guard, to assist a vessel that had become disabled off the coast of Clogherhead.

Weather conditions were favourable with calm seas and good visibility and it took just seven minutes from launching on the beach for the lifeboat to reach the scene where the disabled vessel was. It had already been secured by tow to another vessel when they arrived.

Clogherhead RNLI volunteers were requested to accompany both vessels to the security of nearby Port Oriel Harbour, Clogherhead as a precaution which they duly did.

Clogherhead RNLI coxswain Gerald Sharkey said: “The vessel’s owners were correct to alert the Coast Guard when they became disabled. Situations like this can escalate very quickly.

“Happily, on this occasion, with the help of Clogherhead Coast Guard and the towing vessel, danger was averted and there was a safe and secure outcome for all concerned.”

Meanwhile, Clogherhead RNLI will hold a family fundraising event this coming weekend on Sunday June 23rd from 2 to 5 p.m. at Barmeath Castle and Gardens in Togher.

'Barmeath Family Day' is always a very popular occasion.  It is, of course, a chance to view the beautiful gardens at Barmeath Castle and support Clogherhead lifeboat in their 125th year at the same time.

Barmeath is such a unique and historical location, it is always worth a visit. There will be history walks on the day along with face-painting, refreshments and a raffle….an occasion not to be missed!
