Carers one step closer to GP cards – O'Dowd

Front Page

Deputy Fergus O'Dowd.

Local TD, Fergus O'Dowd, has welcomed the passing of the Health (General Practitioner Service) Bill 2018 through the Seanad.

This long awaited legislation will enable approximately 14,000 carers to gain access to free GP care.

"Currently 17% of the 80,000+ carers nationally are not entitled to a GP visit card and this legislation, which passed through the Seanad today, aims to extend that cover to those individuals."

"The role of carers in our society cannot be understated, they are the pillars of families with loved ones in need of care and attention, this legislation aims to ensure that we lessen the burden on carers in Ireland."

"The investment that we have seen recently in respite provision goes someway to providing a break for many carers in Louth and Meath but we must continue to fight tooth and nail for more funding, better facilities and stronger services in this area."

“This legislation seeks to extend that cover so that the 17% of carers that did not have access to free GP Care will now be included. My hope is that this will pass through the Dail quickly and the process will be in effect by September of this year."
