Horrified by the death and destruction of the Kurdish people at the hands of the Turkish invaders in Northern Syria, members of a group calling itself Drogheda Community Resistance (DCR) have called for all dealings between Drogheda and Turkey to be suspended.
DCR say that the Turkish Ambassador, Levent Murat Burhan, who has been a frequent visitor to Drogheda in recent years, is not welcome back until the attacks end and Turkey’s warlike President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who they have dubbed 'the Turkish Oliver Cromwell', is deposed.
There have been many links between Turkey and Drogheda in recent times. In February Murat Burhan was welcomed to Drogheda by the then Mayor Frank Godfrey and the Chamber of Commerce.
A couple of months later, in April, a delegation from Drogheda was invited for dinner at the Ambassador’s residence in Dublin to discuss business opportunities to deepen trade relationships with Turkey.

Prior to that, in October 2018 Mayor Frank Godfrey led a delegation from Drogheda to Turkey which attended a three-day Festival in Antalya, at the invitation of the mayor of Antalya.
“The Turkish state has unleashed a hurricane of death and destruction on the people of Northern Syria” DCR said in a statement issued to Drogheda Life.
“The area, Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES), often known as Rojava, underwent a revolution, starting in 2012 that introduced the most thorough democracy yet seen in the region, and one of the most democratic forms of self-governance ever seen in the modern world.
“Turkey, under the virtual dictator Erdogan is determined to wipe out this socialist feminist environmental revolution because they fear the Kurdish population in Turkey along the border with Syria will revolt, encouraged by the success of their brothers and sisters in Syria.
“The Kurdish YPG and YPJ along with their comrades in the Syrian Democratic Forces, fought a long war against ISIS and won. Now they face the genocidal mania of the second largest army in NATO.
“You might wonder why we are so concerned with this on a local Drogheda page. Aside from the fact that we want to create the type of society here that the Kurds of Syria and their allies were trying to create, our town, through our elected councillors, has developed a relationship with the murderous Turkish state and its ambassador to Ireland.
“This relationship must end. When you see any of your local elected representatives, tell them the Turkish Ambassador is not welcome here until the attacks on Rojava end and Erdogan, the Turkish Oliver Cromwell, is deposed.
“SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF THE AUTONOMOUS REGIONS OF NORTH AND EASTERN SYRIA. HANDS OFF ROJAVA!”
