Calls for immediate cleaning of Drogheda's footpaths

Councillor Kevin Callan has demanded that Louth County Council carry out cleansing of public paths in Drogheda’s town centre area on public health grounds.

“There is serious annoyance from the public about the unhygienic state of the paths and also the condition of bins in the town centre area” the Independent Councillor said.

“I have demanded urgent action in street and footpath cleaning and disinfecting of bins.”

Callan raised the topic at Monday night’s Borough Council meeting saying that the footpaths in town had become very dirty which, in addition to the constant littering problems, was giving the town a very bad image.

He said that the judges from the Tidy Towns Competition were due in town shortly and he hoped that something could be done before then.

Callan also appealed for members of the public to join in the battle against illegal dumping asking people who witness such activity to help apprehend the culprits by either taking a photo or making a note of the registration number of vehicles involved.

Callan was told by the Director of Services that the total lack of rain for the past three weeks wasn’t helping matters but he assured Councillors that new specialist footpath cleaning equipment would be coming on stream in the first week in July.
