Not the right time after being re-elected to Council in June

Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has announced that he will not be contesting the General Election for Louth and East Meath after deciding to continue with his work as an independent member of Louth County Council.

Callan told Drogheda Life that in June he had sought re-election for a third time as a councillor and the people gave him their support for five more years to serve.

“I have an obligation and responsibility to honour and respect that support and I will do so” he said.

Councillor Callan contested the General election four years ago and secured the highest ever first preference vote for an independent in the constituency since the foundation of the State with over 3,000 votes. In June he contested the Local Government Elections in both Drogheda Urban and Drogheda Rural and was elected in both receiving 897 votes in the town and 896 in the rural area.

“People in Drogheda have always been very kind to me and worked with me as they know my only priority is Drogheda and fighting for it to be treated fairly” Callan said.

“I do not feel it would be right, after being re-elected to the Council, to announce that I am seeking to be a TD. I will continue the fight for Drogheda as an elected councillor and will continue highlighting when I find that Drogheda is not being fairly treated and to fight such injustice in getting things changed.

“I would not rule out running in a future general election however this is not the right time”.

The Councillor and former mayor said he wished to thank everyone who has worked with him and helped him in working for Drogheda over the past ten years. The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the Taoiseach made the announcement of the election and such support is much appreciated.

“People of Drogheda are absolutely fantastic and it is an honour each and every day to work with them and to receive their support at the ballot box. As I said last June, I will honour that support and will work all the hours available as a councillor to help in any way that I can.
