Councillor James Byrne wants Louth County Council to dye the River Boyne green for future St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, just like they have been doing in Chicago and other American cities for many years.
The Fianna Fáil Councillor made a proposal to Louth County Council at this morning's monthly meeting in County Hall to dye the river green for St Patrick's Day 2024.
“On the back of another successful St Patrick’s Day in Drogheda I have asked Louth County Council to follow the example of Chicago by ‘greening’ the River Boyne in the town as part of next year’s St Patrick’s Day festivities” he said.

“St Patrick himself sailed up the Boyne through Drogheda almost 1,600 years ago and if global media attention is to be drawn on any river on St Patrick’s Day it should be the Boyne” he declared.
“My understanding is that the costs are minimal, and the dye used in Chicago is environmentally friendly so I’ve asked Louth County Council to liaise with the City of Chicago to see how this can be done here”.
