At the presentation of the Drogheda Amateur Boxing Club documents to the Old Drogheda Society were (from left): Darcey Harrington, Adrienne Harrington, Shane Heeney, John McCullen, President of the Old Drogheda Society, Richard Moore, Donnchadh Mac Raghnaill, Vice Chairperson ODS, John Devitt, and Noel Bailey.
Millmount Museum Archives recently received the minute books, letters and documents of the Drogheda Amateur Boxing Club, founded in 1936 at the bottom of Mary Street, when they were presented by Rita Lambe and members of her family.
The cache of material was gratefully received by members of the Old Drogheda Society General Committee and acknowledged by the Society’s President John McCullen who had written about the Club in the Old Drogheda Society’s 2013 Journal.
Rare photographs and letters are also included in the collection which was preserved by the Lambe and Reynolds families. Both Benny Lambe and Tony Reynolds had been champion boxers during the time pre-dating Olympic boxer ‘Sox’ Byrne and more recently Deirdre Gogarty.
Historians and students of sport can examine the collection by appointment at Millmount.
