A CCTV image of the man attacking the decorations on the railings of the Boomerang Club for the Pride Parade.
Boomerang Youth Service and Café is one of the better things about Drogheda, they offer a range of recreational, educational and specialist supports for young people and pride themselves on being an open, welcoming and inclusive organisation. They have literally transformed the lives of many young people.
So they were more than a little annoyed when they were the victims of a mindless attack by a passer-by late last Monday night. They’re annoyed and also mystified about the motive for what they think was a homophobic attack.
They’re annoyed but also ready to forgive and they’ve written this open letter to Drogheda Life readers in the hope that the man responsible might see it:

Boomerang was delighted to be involved in the recent Pride Celebrations and as part of this, a parent of one of the young people who attends our service, kindly designed some pieces of beautiful kniffiti (hand-knitted graffiti) which she then carefully sewed onto the railings of the building.
You can imagine our shock on arriving to work on Monday 29th July to find that someone had actually cut this items from the railings and discarded them on the path.
We have viewed the CCTV cameras and can see that it took place at 12.39am on Monday morning. Three males walked by the building and then turned back. One male proceeded to take a knife and cut through each item. Although the two other males did not participate in this, they did stand by and do nothing to stop it.
You know who you are. What statement were you trying to make? Was it an act of homophobia or just plain damage and vandalism?
Regardless of why you did it, your actions were disrespectful, shameful and narrow minded. You destroyed these items with no thought or consideration for others or understanding of the service provided by the staff in Boomerang.
We don’t understand your actions, it may seem to you that we are an easy target in the darkness of night.
We are big enough to accept your apology for the damage and hurt caused, but are you big enough to admit your wrongdoing?
We look forward to hearing your side of the story – You can contact us on 041-9839916
