As the country mourns the loss of the Nobel Peace Laureate, statesman and tireless campaigner for peace on this island, the former SDLP leader John Hume, the Mayor of Drogheda, Councillor Kevin Callan, has opened a book of condolences at the Tholsel.

Urging as many people as possible to sign the book Councillor Callan told Drogheda Life that John Hume was the Daniel O’Connell or Charles Stewart Parnell of our time.

“Drogheda was very lucky to have the chance to honour John Hume by investing him with the Freed om of the town in 1981.

Repeating the words of President Michael D. Higgins: “We are all living in John Hume’s Ireland.”

The book of condolences will remain open for signatures until 5.30 on Friday, 7th August.

In line with Government policy in relation to COVID-19, those wishing to sign a book of condolence are asked to observe public health measures and to bring their own pen.
