At a well-attended meeting in the d Hotel on Monday night, Aontu Party Leader and Euro candidate Peadar Tóibín T.D. and local representative Michael O'Dowd discussed recent developments in Drogheda and addressed various issues brought up by those present.

One of the main topics discussed was the upcoming opening of the refugee centre at the d Hotel. Serious concerns were voiced regarding the readiness of the town's social infrastructure to accommodate an additional 500 refugees amidst the town's ongoing growth.

There was agreement on the urgent necessity for a comprehensive plan to ensure adequate resources are in place to meet the heightened demand. This encompassed the provision of additional healthcare professionals, such as doctors, dentists, nurses, and specialists, as well as addressing the requirements for expanded educational facilities and teaching staff.

Speaking on the opening of the centre O'Dowd expressed disbelief at the apparent lack of awareness from the Council regarding the plans. He emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in such decisions, stating that it was "scarcely credible" for the Council to claim they were unaware of what was planned.

Echoing these sentiments, Party Leader Peadar Tóibín emphasised Aontú's stance on supporting a sustainable immigration policy. He stressed the importance of fostering open and respectful dialogue surrounding the government's handling of migration and refugee issues.

Tóibín emphasised that citizens must be able to voice their concerns without fear of being labelled or silenced, highlighting the legitimacy of many people's concerns about the government's approach to these matters.

In addition, O'Dowd also emphasised the need to instil pride in our town and pledged to work tirelessly, committing to serve the citizens 24/7.
