These days Drogheda woman Hannah O’Brien is a highly sought after soprano on the international opera circuit, but it has been a long-held ambition for her to sing for an audience in her home town where she first developed a love for singing and for opera. 

Next month she will fulfil that ambition when she returns to Drogheda to perform a ‘Summer Recital’ in St Peter’s Church of Ireland on Friday the 30^th of August at 7:30pm. 

Born and reared in Drogheda, Hannah has pursued her career as a soprano and is now in great demand performing as a soloist in operas in London and elsewhere and is also a one of the soloists at the Wexford Festival Opera this season. 

Hannah’s musical talent was honed as a member of the Lourdes Youth Choir under its Musical Director, Jackie Walshe. As a young girl she joined the choir and it wasn’t long before her superb voice marked her out as an outstanding Soprano of the future. 

Following her time with the Lourdes Youth Choir, Hannah enrolled at the Royal Irish Music Academy where she studied under the musical tutorship of Sylvia O’ Regan and Dr Dearbhla Collins where she attained her Bachelor and Masters of Music performance. 

A recent alumna of the Royal Northern College of Music, Hannah obtained a Distinction in her Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Vocal Studies, studying under Elizabeth Ritchie.

In 2022/23 Hannah O’Brien was a Wexford Festival “Factory Artist” where she received the Danone Young Outstanding Female Artist Award. She returns to the main stage this season to sing the role of “Confidant” and “First Niece” in Charles Villiers Stanford’s, The Critic.

In August she will perform the role of “Female Chorus” in the British Youth Opera’s production of “The Rape of Lucretia” 

Hannah says; “I’m absolutely thrilled to get the opportunity to sing in my home town and so grateful to the people in St Peter’s Church of Ireland for allowing me to perform in this beautiful venue.

“I will, of course, be joined by my friend and accompanist, Rebecca Warren and have also managed to bring an excellent Scottish tenor, Liam Foster, to also join me for the recital.  Another good friend, Alison Comyn, will introduce the proceedings and have a pre recital chat.

"However, I couldn’t return to Drogheda without singing with the Lourdes Youth Choir once again, where it all started for me as a young girl with Jackie Walsh and her father Sean Walsh so good to me”.

This is a night not to be missed for this recital by one of Drogheda’s finest Sopranos.
